Snowy Mountains travel guide

Where to stay, food, money-saving tips, alpine safety and sample plans for the Snowy Mountains.

Areas: where to base yourself

  • Thredbo: village on the slopes, year-round.
  • Perisher and Charlotte Pass: ski-in lodges in winter.
  • Jindabyne: the service town, cheaper and open year-round.
  • Crackenback: resorts between Jindabyne and Thredbo.

Food and drink

Resort villages have cafés, bars and restaurants that are busiest in winter. Jindabyne has the widest choice and supermarkets for self-catering.

Money-saving tips

  • Stay in Jindabyne and drive or take the Skitube up.
  • Buy lift passes online and in advance.
  • Visit midweek and outside school holidays.
  • In summer, many walks and lakes are free once you have paid park entry.

Safety and practicalities

Alpine weather can change within minutes, even in summer: carry warm, waterproof clothing, water and sunscreen. In winter, check road conditions and chain requirements. Tell someone your plans on longer walks.

Two days (summer)
