Orange is a handsome country city on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano. Its vineyards are among the highest in Australia, producing elegant cool-climate wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, and the region is also known for apples, cherries and a strong food culture. The poet Banjo Paterson was born nearby. This is Wiradjuri Country.
About two hours north, Mudgee is a laid-back wine town with dozens of cellar doors, many family-run, known for rich reds and a growing range of Italian varieties. Nearby Gulgong is a well-preserved gold-rush town. Both areas suit a slow weekend of tasting and eating, and they combine well with the Blue Mountains on the way from Sydney.
