Where to stay in New South Wales

How to choose your bases, what to budget, and real hotels in each destination, with live rates on Booking.com.

Most visitors spend four or five nights in Sydney, then two or three nights in each of one to three other places. Choose by what you want from your days: city life, beaches, mountains, wine or the outback.

Price bands (approximate)

Prices vary widely with the season and the day of the week. As a rough guide for a double room per night: budget hostels, motels and holiday parks from around A$80–180; mid-range hotels around A$180–350; upscale hotels and resorts from around A$350, and much more on Sydney Harbour and in peak season.

When to book

For the summer holidays, Easter, long weekends and New Year’s Eve in Sydney, book several months ahead. Book early too for ski-season weekends in the Snowy Mountains, for Byron Bay during Bluesfest, and for Hunter Valley weekends. Midweek and outside the school holidays, you can often book a few days before.

Practical notes

  • Minimum stays: many coastal and ski properties require two or more nights at weekends and in holidays.
  • Parking: Sydney hotel parking is expensive; ask before you book if you have a car.
  • Holiday parks: cabins in coastal holiday parks are good value for families and road-trippers.
  • Self-contained apartments: common everywhere, and useful for longer stays.

Accommodation questions

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Sydney for a first visit?

Circular Quay and The Rocks are the most central for the harbour; the CBD and Darling Harbour are good value on weekends; Bondi and Manly suit beach lovers. See our Sydney guide.

Should I stay overnight in the Blue Mountains?

If you can. The lookouts are at their best early and late in the day, when day-trippers have gone.

Are hotels cheaper outside Sydney?

Usually, yes, except in Byron Bay and the Hunter Valley at weekends, and ski resorts in winter.

What is a motel in Australia?

A simple roadside hotel with parking outside the room. They are common in country towns and often good value.

Do I need to book far ahead?

For the summer holidays, Easter, long weekends and the ski season, yes. Otherwise a few weeks ahead is usually enough.

Are the hotels here all verified?

They are real properties, but we have not stayed in all of them. Read recent reviews before booking.
