Byron Bay sits near the top of the NSW coast, about an hour south of Queensland’s Gold Coast. Once a whaling and meat-works town, it became a surf and alternative-culture haven from the 1960s and is now one of the most popular destinations in the state, known for its beaches, its relaxed but stylish atmosphere and its festivals. This is Bundjalung Country, where the cape is known as Walgun.
The town wraps around Cape Byron, crowned by its lighthouse, with surf beaches on either side and the Julian Rocks marine reserve offshore. Inland, the green hills of the Northern Rivers hide villages such as Bangalow and Nimbin and waterfalls in World Heritage rainforest. Combine Byron with Coffs Harbour on a drive up the coast.
Highlights
- Cape Byron Lighthouse: the walking track around the cape and the most easterly point of the mainland.
- Beaches: Main Beach, Wategos, The Pass, Clarkes and Tallow.
- Sea kayaking: paddle with dolphins and look for turtles.
- Julian Rocks: one of the best dive and snorkel sites on the coast.
- The hinterland: Bangalow, Nimbin and waterfalls such as Minyon Falls.
- Whale watching: humpbacks pass close to the cape from about May to November.
