Newcastle travel guide

Where to stay, food, money-saving tips, safety and sample plans for Newcastle.

Areas: where to base yourself

  • Newcastle East: beaches, baths and Fort Scratchley on the doorstep.
  • City centre: shops, bars and the light rail.
  • Honeysuckle: harbour-front hotels and restaurants.
  • Merewether: a beach suburb at the southern end of the coastal walk.

Food and drink

Darby Street and the harbour have good cafés and restaurants, and the city has a strong craft beer scene. It is also a gateway to Hunter Valley wine.

Money-saving tips

  • The baths, beaches and coastal walk are free.
  • Hotels are often cheaper than in Sydney or the Hunter Valley.
  • Use Newcastle as a base for Hunter day tours.

Safety and practicalities

Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches. Do not swim at the Bogey Hole in rough seas. Newcastle is generally safe; use normal city precautions at night.

Sample plans

One day

Walk the breakwall to Nobbys, visit Fort Scratchley, then follow the coast past the Ocean Baths and the Bogey Hole.

Two days
