Things to see in Newcastle

Ocean baths, the Bogey Hole, the breakwall to Nobbys, a fort, a cathedral and the harbour ferry.

Most of the sights lie along the coast within walking distance of the centre. Walk the Bathers Way in either direction, stopping for a swim, and save the harbour and the cathedral for another morning.

1 Newcastle Ocean Baths

Newcastle Ocean Baths

Opened in the 1920s, these large seawater pools sit right on the edge of the ocean, behind an Art Deco pavilion. Waves sometimes break over the wall at high tide.

Practical: Free. Check for closures during maintenance or big seas.

2 The Bogey Hole

The Bogey Hole

A rock pool cut into the cliff by convicts in the early nineteenth century for the commandant of the penal settlement. It is a dramatic place to swim, but dangerous in big seas.

Practical: Free. Closed in heavy surf; follow the signs.

3 Nobbys Head and the breakwall

Nobbys Head and the breakwall

A long breakwall leads out to Nobbys Head and its lighthouse at the harbour entrance. Watch huge coal ships pass close by, and look for dolphins.

Practical: Free. About 30–45 minutes return from Nobbys Beach.

4 Fort Scratchley

Fort Scratchley

A historic coastal fort above the harbour, famous for returning fire on a Japanese submarine in 1942. Tunnel tours let you see below the gun emplacements.

Practical: Grounds free; tunnel tours ticketed. Check opening days.

5 Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral

The Anglican cathedral on the hill above the city centre, built over many decades, with a fine interior and views over the harbour.

Practical: Free. Open most days; check service times.

6 Stockton ferry

Stockton ferry

A short public ferry crosses the harbour to Stockton, giving views back to the city, the port and Nobbys. On the other side, walk to Stockton Beach.

Practical: Opal fares. A few minutes each way.
