Blue Mountains travel guide

Where to base yourself, what to eat, how to save money and sample plans for one to three days in the mountains.

Towns: where to base yourself

  • Katoomba: the station, Echo Point and the most accommodation and restaurants.
  • Leura: quieter and prettier, with guesthouses and gardens.
  • Wentworth Falls: close to the falls and walking tracks.
  • Blackheath: the base for the Grose Valley and the best walks.

Food and drink

Katoomba and Leura have good cafés, bakeries and restaurants. Afternoon tea is a mountain tradition, and in winter, open fires and hearty food come into their own. Book dinner at weekends.

Money-saving tips

  • Take the train instead of a tour: the fare is capped like Sydney’s.
  • Most lookouts and walks are free.
  • Stay midweek, when rooms are cheaper.

Safety and practicalities

Stay behind railings and on marked tracks, and check NPWS alerts before walking, as tracks can close after storms or fires. Weather changes fast: carry a rain jacket and warm layer. On longer walks, tell someone your plans and carry plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Blue Mountains as a day trip from Sydney?

Yes. The train takes about two hours each way, and you can see Echo Point, Scenic World and a lookout or two in a day.

Is Scenic World worth it?

For first-timers and families, yes. If you prefer walking, the lookouts and tracks are free and just as impressive.

Do I need a car?

Not for the main towns and lookouts. You need one for Jenolan Caves and the more remote spots.

How cold is it?

Several degrees colder than Sydney, with frosty winter nights and occasional snow.

Which is the best walk?

The Grand Canyon track and the National Pass are the classics. The Prince Henry Cliff Walk is easier.
