When to go to Sydney

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots; summer is beach season, and winter is mild and sunny.

Sydney has a humid subtropical climate: warm to hot summers, mild winters and rain spread through the year, with the wettest months usually in late summer and autumn.

Season by season

Spring (September–November)

Warm, bright days, jacarandas in purple bloom in November and whales off the coast early in the season. One of the best times to visit.

Summer (December–February)

Hot and often humid, with thunderstorms and the busiest beaches. New Year’s Eve and the school holidays push prices to their peak.

Autumn (March–May)

Settled, warm weather and the sea at its warmest in March. Mardi Gras and Easter bring crowds; May starts to cool.

Winter (June–August)

Mild, often sunny days around 17–19 °C and cool nights. Too cold for most to swim, but good for walking, whale watching and Vivid Sydney.
