Getting to Byron Bay

Fly to Ballina or the Gold Coast, or make it the end of a road trip up the coast.

Getting around Byron

The town is compact, and most beaches are within walking or cycling distance. Parking is limited and paid. For the hinterland, Minyon Falls and Nimbin, hire a car or join a tour; local buses are infrequent.

Onward

Drive south to Coffs Harbour (about 2 h 30) or north to Queensland. See the NSW transport guide.

Flying in via Coolangatta

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is at Coolangatta, right on the Queensland–NSW border, and Byron Bay is roughly 50 minutes to an hour south by car or shuttle, depending on traffic. If you have a spare half-day at either end of the trip, Coolangatta’s beaches and surf points are a short hop from the terminal; our Coolangatta travel guide covers them.
